Swine Flu Update
In response to the recent H1N1 (swine flu) outbreak, SRVGAL is
following the guidelines set forth by the Contra Costa Health
Services department and the federal Centers for Disease Control
& Prevention. We encourage you to stay informed and check with
them for updates. Our league position, at this point, is to
continue with practices and games, as scheduled. SRVGAL will
also monitor for updates and communicate with you any intended
changes to league play through postings on this website.
Health officials are advising the public:
- If you are sick, stay home from work or school.
- If you live with someone who is sick with flu-like
symptoms, consider staying home.
- If you are sick or anyone in your family is sick with
flu-like symptoms, do not attend large public events.
- Attending a public event may increase your chance of being
exposed to an illness. If you do decide to attend a public
event, use good hand and respiratory hygiene.
- If you have flu symptoms contact your health care
provider. Your health care provider will determine whether
influenza testing or treatment is needed. Flu symptoms include
fever, body aches, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, or
vomiting or diarrhea.
- Only go to the emergency room if you have a medical
emergency.
- Request swine flu testing if with severe flu-like
symptoms.
- There is no vaccine available right now to protect against
swine flu. The CDC is working on one. It will not likely be
available for several months.
- Treatment with antivirals, unless your health provider
advises otherwise.
- Help protect yourself and your family by using the same
simple steps used to prevent regular seasonal flu: Cough or
sneeze into your sleeve, wash your hands frequently or use
alcohol-based hand sanitizers, try to avoid contact with sick
people.
- Masks: not currently recommending the general public wear
facemasks. We are recommending that people who are sick with
flu symptoms wear a facemask around others. Try to stay at
least 6 feet away from others who may be sick.
Additional information can be found at
www.cchealth.org/topics/swine_flu.

important goal of using sports to teach life lessons. Please let
SRVGAL know of coaches who
• Emphasize effort, learning and bouncing back from mistakes
• Fill their players emotional tanks with encouragement and
praise
• Honor all aspects of the game, treating players, umpires and
fellow coaches with respect.

In Memory of Don Morris "Big Don"
Don Morris was a Larger than Life figure of a man. He was fun
loving, extraordinary and unique in everything he did. He loved
the girls he coached, loved the competition, loved all that
encompassed his family. Don coached SRVGAL teams in 2003 White –
2005 10 Blue seasons and when he was not coaching he was a
parent coach on his daughters' teams. All who met Don loved his
straight forward, fun loving, matter of fact energy and approach
to life. He touched anyone who met him and will be missed by all
that knew him.
He brought a true love of life wherever he was. He left this
field called earth at too young of an age. Don is pictured
laying on the ground with the girls having fun with him—this
photo represents the wonderful nature of Don. He is survived by
his wife Michelle, his twin daughters Brittany (14) and
Alexandra (14), Brooke (12), and Madison (5).

Memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday October 26th
at St. Mary's College Chapel. 1928 St. Mary's Road, Moraga, CA.
Reception will immediately follow in the St. Mary's Sota Center.

A Welcome Message From the New SRVGAL
President
Welcome to a new season of fun and exciting fastpitch softball
with the San Ramon Valley Girls Athletic League! I am Bill
Burchard, the league president. For more than twelve years now,
I’ve been involved with SRVGAL as a parent, coach and board
member. The board and I are committed to the league mission of
providing team softball for every player (ages 5 to 18) in the
communities we serve as well as promoting level play,
sportsmanship, skill development, and fun.
Registration is now open (Sept-Oct) for our upcoming 2009
season, which runs from April to June. We offer on-line and
mail-in registration. You can register or download the necessary
forms at the league website, www.srvgal.org.
Due to the overwhelming support of the girls and their
families (you!), SRVGAL play will continue with grade-based
(Pre-K/K, 1st/2nd, 3rd/4th, 5th/6th, 7th/8th, and High
School) divisions. Additionally, we’re looking to establishing a
tradition of inter-league play in at least one division, with
other surrounding area leagues. More information on divisions
and levels of play is available on the league website.
During registration, you will be given an opportunity to
volunteer for your daughter’s team or the league, and/or sponsor
a team. Please do! Volunteerism and sponsorship are key
components to the success of SRVGAL. We are looking for those
interested in coaching, as well as helping in administrative
positions on our board of directors. We want each player and
volunteer coach to have a successful and rewarding experience,
and offer skills training to optimize those chances. If you
would like to learn more about any open board or coaching
positions, feel free to contact me directly, at
srvgalprez@comcast.net
The areas we serve are growing. Our partnerships with the San
Ramon Valley Unified School District, the City of San Ramon and
the Town of Danville, allow us access to the fields at several
new schools and parks opening this year. We are excited to be
able to offer our players brand new venues for play and
improvements on fields we’ve been using. Look to our website for
information and locations of all our fields.
SRVGAL is your league and we care about what you think. Please
feel free to contact any board member, if you have questions or
concerns about the league. E-mail links for every board member
are on the website. If you know of anyone that would like to
play or join the league, please forward this message and website
address, www.srvgal.org, to them.
The 2009 season is sure to be fun and exciting for the whole
family. Visit www.srvgal.org and register today.
Thank You,
Bill
William Burchard, President
